Elite marathoners Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan explain where intervals fit into their rigorous training regimen, which can include 120 miles of running per week (which they ran while training for the London Olympics). An interval run alternates high-intensity levels with lower-intensity effort. Kara and Shalane do them to build speed and endurance and typically do 800m and 1-mile repeats, up to 12 miles, or as little as 2 miles as sub-race pace.
